Hunting

Forests of national significance administrated by the Forest Enterprise occupy 39158 ha and are situated in the regions of Panevėžys, Radviliškis, Kupiškis and Kėdainiai. In the majority of them, hunting circles and clubs engage in recreational hunting, while the Forest Enterprise organizes professional hunts (PH) in the area of 10400 ha. The main intended purpose of areas devoted to professional hunting is multiplication of wild game populations and propagation of hunting traditions and hunting tourism. Forests of Anciškiai, Krekenava, Ramygala and Naujamiestis Forest Districts are best suited for hunting. Professional hunts are led by highly qualified and experienced specialists. PH territories abound with game: moose, red deer, fallow-deer, roes and wild boars. Bisons roam freely here, too. Every year wild animals inflict substantial damages to forest and agricultural crops. In order to avoid the damage done by the ungulates to wild nature or to reduce it, forest plantations are hedged off, oak saplings are protected individually, repellents are applied to coniferous trees, and there are also about 60 ha provided for feeding plots.

In Krekenava Forest District there are special premises with halls accommodating 100 and 30 participants, where meetings and conferences can be organized. Anciškiai Forest District has arranged an integrated organization of forest management operations and professional hunting; there is also a training base established for preparing of hunting specialists. Here, students and lecturers of the Faculty of Forests of Agriculture University of Lithuania perform scientific research on balanced hunting management and reduction of damage inflicted upon forests by cervine animals.

In 2004, Forest Enterprise commenced a program aimed at raising the numbers in animal populations. An enclosure of fallow-deer and moufflons was renovated in Krekenava Forest District. In 2005, a herd of 34 fallow-deer was delivered from Slovakia and settled in the enclosure. When it will have increased, calves of the fallow-deer will be annually let into forests intended for PH, in order to amplify the population of wild game.

Seeking to familiarize the general public with more diverse species of animals, the enclosure boasts dappled deer, moufflons and wild boards, which can be watched from the specially installed place.
